In terms of the Department of Labour Mandate (Ref HS 3/1/10/07/10, dated 06 December 2010) the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association of South Africa (LPGSA) is mandated to undertake the acceptance and verification of all LPG appliances (as per SANS 1539) including low pressure regulators (SANS1237) and LPG hoses (SANS 1156-2).
Furthermore, as determined by the Department of Labour, the LPGSA is required to introduce and maintain procedures and systems that ensure that all LPG appliances sold or distributed in South Africa are proven to comply fully with the requirements of SANS 1539. This procedure is undertaken through the Safe Appliance Scheme as administered by the LPGSA.
As the secretariat, the LPGSA will issue an LP Gas Verification Permit to the importer or local manufacturer of appliances, hoses and regulators that have been tested by an approved Test House as confirmed as being compliant with relevant South African National Standard.
Please note that the scope of the current LPGSA Safe Appliance Scheme has been expanded to include Natural gas domestic and commercial appliances falling within the scope of SANS 1539, through an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Southern African Gas Association NPC or SAGA, and LPGSA. Endorsed by the Department of Labour.
Southern African Gas Association NPC or SAGA has introduced the Safe Gas Equipment Scheme for registration of industrial Natural Gas equipment and LP Gas industrial equipment falling within the scope of SANS 347 and SANS 329. For more information please view more
As per the Pressure Equipment Regulations, LP Gas installations and Natural Gas will require a registered gas practitioner to indicate and certify on the Certificate of Conformance (COC) that the equipment installed has been formally verified to SABS SANS standards and is safe for use.
